PREPARING YOUR GARDEN FOR WINTER

Just because there is a chill in the air and the flowers are gone doesn't mean it's time to forget about your garden. There is plenty to do this time of year - in addition to general clean up, now is a good time to cut back (or divide) perennials, begin to prepare your soil for spring, plant bulbs, and protect tender plants from the harsh weather (and hungry deer!) to come.

PREPARING YOUR HOME or COMPANY

This has been a busy year for the folks at our sister company, Catskill Harvest Home.  In addition to some high profile work renovating building facades and interiors in downtown Liberty, they have worked to build a new maintenance building at Camp Tel Yehuda (Barryville, NY), constructed a home addition here in White Sulphur Springs, and installed a huge new garden in Forestburg..to name a few.
Although these were large projects, they do lots of smaller ones, too.  If there's an item on your to-do list that you could use some help with, give them a call at 845-292-3833.  They can assist with:
FALL CLEANUP
Leaf and gutter cleaning
Removing dangerous trees and/or branches
Splitting and stacking wood
Improving drainage
ENERGY COST SAVINGS
New roofs
Installation of insulation - ceilings, mudrooms, attics
Drafty window fixes or replacement
Door replacement
New heating systems
Leak repair
Installing more efficient lighting
GENERAL REMODELING
A new bedroom, bathroom or dream kitchen
Remove - or create - walls
Fireplace/stove installation
Much more!

BAR-B-Q SEASON WRAP UP

This summer Catskill Harvest customers were treated to not 1 but 2 terrific Bar-B-Q events - the first, on July 21, was our second annualCustomer Appreciation Day. This event meant a lot to us because 2012 marks our 5th year in business - how time flies! And although we say it often, we'd like to take this opportunity to say it again: Thank You! We are so appreciative of all the support we have received from the community during the past 5 years that we feel we can't say it enough.

And, on Saturday August 25, we were thrilled to host another BBQ event - this one a fundraiser for the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County. Thanks to everyone who attended - the Extension was able to raise a few dollars and, perhaps more importantly, sign up quite a few new members. As a reminder, the Extension offers advice and services on a variety of subjects - agriculture, horticulture, soil & water conservation and more. Click here to learn more about them.

(We'd like to call out a special thanks to Catskill Harvest's kitchen team -Eric & Anthony - for being the best burger flippers in Sullivan County at both these events!)

FALL GARDENING

Late summer and early fall is a bittersweet time for those of us who love gardening.  On one hand, shorter days and chilly nights signal the end of summer approaching.  On the other hand, most folks love fall weather - and so do plants.  Gardeners know now is a great time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials - the sun is less brutal, and there is still plenty of time for new plants to get established before winter.  Take advantage of great fall prices, too - our remaining nursery stock is currently on sale for 40 - 60% OFF. And if you're on a tight budget check out The Daily Green for some money saving fall gardening tips.

We still have enough plants left for larger projects, and can special order, too. There are evergreens for wind breaks (which will pay for themselves in energy savings), and many other trees, shrubs and perennials to choose from. If you've got a project that's been on your mind, contact the folks at our sister company, Catskill Harvest Home, at 845-292-3833 - they'd be happy to give you an estimate.

CATSKILL HARVEST HOME PREPARES FOR COOLER WEATHER AHEAD

The First Day of Autumn is Saturday, September 22.  During this season our sister company, Catskill Harvest Home, starts booking indoor jobs for the winter months, such as painting, finish carpentry, new fireplaces or wood stoves, and general renovation & remodeling work.  As you begin to prepare your home for fall & winter, consider having Douglas Yaun or Will Foster from the Catskill Harvest Home team prepare an estimate for any projects you may be thinking about - roof and window repairs or replacements are good places to start. The Farmers Almanac says this is going to be a colder than normal winter - not just colder than last year - so be  prepared.

A LETTER FROM GARDEN CENTER MANAGER DAYNA HALPRIN

Dayna Halprin joined Catskill Harvest last year assisting our Chef Eric Soares in the kitchen.  What we didn't realize at the time we hired her is the extensive background Dayna has in all things related to gardening.  We are pleased to announce that Dayna has agreed to leave the kitchen for the season and run our garden center.  Below is a personal letter from Dayna.  We hope you have the opportunity to visit with her and her team this summer.  You will find the entire staff very knowledgable and able to help anyone grow a green thumb or two.

dayna

Hello fellow gardeners!

Now that we have cleared the late season danger of frost it is time to get gardening!  I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new garden center manager. With the start of the growing season I am very excited to make the move from the kitchen into the sun filled garden center, finally making use of my expensive degree in sustainable agriculture. The climate here in Sullivan County where I grew up gardening is the same as at Green Mountain College in Vermont - where I studied.  I look forward to sharing my love of plants with you and answering all of your gardening questions.

My garden center staff -Aimee, Anthony and Patrick - and I are in full swing preparing for a busy summer. New orders of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, hanging baskets, and vegetable starts are flowing in weekly, including organic heirloom varieties and soil amendments.

Let us help you design a garden that inspires you.  We can help you identify plants that are dear tolerant, attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.  We can work with you to design a garden that is perfect for your home.  And, our landscape team can make the work of delivery, layout and installation a snap.  All you need to do is add the love and water.

Each month we will be featuring certain plants in the garden center and offering discounts on these plants.  For the month of June, I've selected berry bushes, fruit trees and evergreens - three of our most popular plant groups.

Did you know that fruit trees usually need a partner in life?  This is true.  If you buy one apple tree, you may never get any apples.  It often takes two apple trees to set fruit.  This is because one tree cannot fertilize itself.  The trees do not need to be the same, just the same species.  Take a Bartlett Pear, and add a Bosch Pear, and you'll get pears! Same with apples, plumbs, cherries - you name it... two are better than one.

Did you know that berry bushes do best in acidic soil?  This is perfect for our Sullivan County soils, as we have very acidic soil in our region.  Did you know that most of them are all but dear proof?  Have you ever had a fresh from the garden, into the oven, blueberry pie? On the 4th of July?  It really doesn't get any better.

Do you want to save money this winter?  Because we are in the mountains, we have a lot of winter wind.  Winter wind robs your home of its precious heat.  Using evergreens as a wind block can knock 30% off your winter heating bill - paying for the trees in no time.  Imagine... there really is such a thing as a money tree.  Let me know if you'd like a property consultation to see if a tree line can help you save energy this winter and every winter thereafter.

Below are my special offers on these three plant groups.

Again, my team and I look forward to helping you with all of your plant needs this summer.

Thank you,
Dayna Halprin
Catskill Harvest Garden Center Manager
